Finished!: A Zombie Survivor Who Looks a Fair Bit Like Yours Truly

Some years ago, when the Middling was introduced to the Terrain Specialties crew in Minneapolis, the first game we all played together was a very fun, zombie survival game, created by Lead Adventure user AKULA: Total AR:SE. It’s fast, fun, has two pages of rules, and can even be played solo (or with lots of player). In that game, we all played various pop-culture figures trying to make it to a ‘choppa atop a building. I controlled Snake Eyes, of G.I. Joe fame, and J-Lo, of Gigli fame.


It was a blast. (see shot above) At the time, I mentioned that it would be fun to play as ourselves. We could make models of ourselves and watch as we inevitably would get eaten by the undead. It seemed like a fun idea, and self-effacing (in a flesh-eating manner).

The recent life-changes (that caused the cancellation of the Dundracon events), opened up the possibility of going to Con of the North 2015, in Minneapolis, this past weekend. The invitational game this year was going to be an AR:SE zombie game featuring “avatars” of  ourselves. You know, a model painted and modeled to look like you.


Dan and Matt and Darren had tried this format out already, making avatars of themselves for a bachelor party themed zombie event. See above, a “casting” shot from their event.  The Middling decided to make one of his own.


Time was of the essence, and working with limited model options, like Dan and Matt had done, I converted a model of myself from the Wargames Factory male apocalypse survivor set. We can see the model above assembled above. Needed were: casual, moderately-stylish yet comfy attire, wide-rimmed glasses, jeans, sneakers, and weapons: a shotgun and a discarded chainsaw seemed likely given ubiquity in zombie films and my immediate environment. Last, and given (over) erudition a book was chosen as the last item, because a not-insignificant portion of my student loans has gone towards buying media that would probably help someone survive a z-pocalypse.


Above, we see a work in progress shot of the model (near done). The weather for priming was not ideal, so some facial detail was lost in a heavier than usual application. Yet, as the paint was added to the model it did start to resemble me in one of my more common outfits: dark blue jeans, super-comfy too-tight-fitting blue sweatshirt, presently parted hairstyle, dirty, well-worn white converse All-Stars/or Sambas. The book in hand, was painted speedily to resemble Max Brook’s Zombie Survival Guide, which would provide some in-game benefit, I suppose. New Citadel technical blood paint was used for the first time, which adds a little character to the base. Will be using it again. The blue of the sweatshirt used the new citadel blue glaze, which I’m less sold on. It added a tremendous amount of gloss to the figure.

Lacking a proper photo/light set-up while moving, the pics are not great (the skin especially is not accurate to the model in person) And the painting? Of middling quality for sure, but finished!


In all, the model turned out a fair representation, although the build is bit more slight than yours truly — and the quick turnaround needed yielded not the best results. However, it did provide a canvas for trying out some new paints, glazes and techniques — and the opportunity to paint something for a specific, immediate reason. So many hobby projects are undertaken for an unforeseeable “tomorrow” of gaming, it’s nice to do something for a concrete purpose from time to time.

Sadly, the morning of the flight to Minneapolis, illness hit, and the trip had to be cancelled. The model will have to sit idly until the next undead uprising…
